Mac: Download & Install Git

  1. Navigate to Applications > Utilities and launch Terminal.app to access your command line interface.

  2. In the Terminal window, enter the following command and press Return to check if Git is already installed on your system:

    git --version
  3. If the terminal displays a Git version number (typically 2.x or higher), you already have Git installed and ready to use. If Git isn't found, macOS will automatically prompt you to download and install the Xcode Command Line Tools, which include Git along with other essential development utilities. Accept this prompt and complete the installation process—this typically takes 5-10 minutes depending on your internet connection.

Windows: Download & Install Git

Windows users need to manually install Git, as it doesn't come pre-installed with the operating system. Here's the straightforward process:

  1. Open your preferred web browser and navigate to Git-scm.com/download to access the official Git distribution.

  2. Click the download button for Windows. The site will automatically detect your system architecture (32-bit or 64-bit) and provide the appropriate installer.

  3. Run the downloaded installer executable as an administrator for the smoothest installation experience.

The default configuration options work well for most developers, but pay attention to the Select Components screen where you can choose to add a desktop shortcut by checking On the Desktop. The installer will also configure Git Bash, a Unix-style command line interface that many developers prefer over the standard Windows Command Prompt. Simply click Next through the remaining options to complete the installation.
