While you could deploy WordPress directly to a web host, professional developers know that local development environments are the cornerstone of efficient, reliable web development.
Working locally transforms your development workflow by providing instant file updates, comprehensive debugging capabilities, and a risk-free testing environment where you can experiment without consequences. This approach mirrors how professional development teams operate, where local development precedes staging and production deployments. In a subsequent exercise, you'll learn the proper workflow for migrating your locally-developed site to a live hosting environment—completing the full development lifecycle.
To establish WordPress locally on your machine, you'll need a local server environment that mimics production hosting conditions. Fortunately, two industry-standard applications—MAMP and XAMPP—eliminate the complexity of manual server configuration. These tools provide Apache web server, MySQL database, and PHP runtime in a single, user-friendly package. Completing this setup exercise is absolutely critical; without a functioning local server, you cannot participate in any subsequent development exercises.

Mac: Installing MAMP
Launch Chrome (or your preferred browser) and navigate to: mamp.info/en
Locate and click the Download button beneath MAMP: One-click-solution for setting up your personal webserver. MAMP remains the most reliable local server solution for macOS, trusted by thousands of developers worldwide.
Click the Download button to begin downloading the installer package.
Once the download completes, click the installer file in your browser's download bar (typically at the bottom of Chrome) and follow the guided installation process to install MAMP into your Applications folder. The installer will handle all necessary configurations automatically.
Navigate to Hard Drive > Applications > MAMP and double-click MAMP.app to launch the application.
NOTE: If you encounter a warning about running MAMP PRO concurrently with MAMP, simply click Launch MAMP to proceed with the free version.
The Apache web server and MySQL database server should initialize automatically—watch for green indicator lights next to each service. If the servers don't start automatically, click the Start Servers button to manually initialize them.
If the MAMP welcome page doesn't open automatically in your browser, click the Open WebStart page button in the MAMP control panel.
The MAMP dashboard will open in your default browser, providing access to server status, database management, and configuration options. Bookmark this page for easy access—you can always return by clicking Open WebStart page in MAMP or navigating directly to localhost:8888/MAMP in any browser.
NOTE: For optimal development experience, consider making Chrome your default browser by going to Chrome > Preferences, locating the Default browser section, and clicking Make Google Chrome the default browser.
MAMP Installation Process
Download MAMP
Navigate to mamp.info/en and click Download button for the one-click webserver solution
Install Application
Follow installation instructions to install MAMP into the Applications folder
Launch MAMP
Open MAMP.app from Hard Drive > Applications > MAMP directory
Start Servers
Apache and MySQL servers should start automatically with green indicators, or click Start Servers
Access WebStart
Open WebStart page automatically or manually navigate to localhost:8888/MAMP
To make Chrome your default browser, go to Chrome > Preferences, and under Default browser, click Make Google Chrome the default browser.
Windows: Installing XAMPP
Launch Chrome and navigate to: tinyurl.com/xampp56
The installer download should begin automatically. If prompted, save the file to your desktop for easy access.
Once the download completes, double-click the installer file and click Yes when Windows prompts for administrator permissions to begin the installation process.
If the installer displays a warning about antivirus software potentially interfering with the installation process, click Yes to continue. Modern antivirus solutions rarely cause issues with XAMPP installation.
If you encounter a User Account Control (UAC) warning, simply click OK to proceed with the installation.
Click Next to begin the XAMPP setup wizard.
In the Select Components screen, ensure all options remain checked to install the complete XAMPP stack (Apache, MySQL, PHP, phpMyAdmin, and additional tools), then click Next.
Verify that C:
\xampp is set as your Installation Folder—this default location ensures optimal performance and compatibility. Click Next to continue.Uncheck Learn more about Bitnami for XAMPP unless you're interested in additional web applications, then click Next.
Click Next once more to begin the actual XAMPP installation process.
The installer will extract and configure all necessary files. When installation completes, ensure Do you want to start the Control Panel now? remains checked, then click Finish.
The XAMPP Control Panel—your central hub for managing local server services—will open automatically.
Click Start next to both Apache and MySQL to initialize these essential services. You should see the status indicators change to green.
If Windows Firewall displays a security warning about blocking features, click Allow access to ensure proper functionality.
Open Chrome and navigate to: localhost to access your local server.
Select English as your preferred language to complete the XAMPP configuration. Congratulations—XAMPP is now successfully installed and running on your system!
XAMPP Installation Process
Download XAMPP
Navigate to tinyurl.com/xampp56 and save the file when download starts automatically
Run Installer
Double-click file, click Yes to start, and continue through antivirus and UAC warnings
Configure Installation
Ensure all components are checked, set C:\xampp as installation folder, uncheck Bitnami option
Complete Setup
Finish installation and launch Control Panel, then start Apache and MySQL services
Verify Installation
Navigate to localhost in Chrome and select English to complete XAMPP installation
If Windows Firewall blocks some features during server startup, click Allow access to ensure proper functionality.
