In this comprehensive tutorial, we'll explore the essential process of adding professional labels to parcels in Civil 3D. This fundamental skill ensures your survey drawings meet industry standards and communicate critical property information clearly. To begin, navigate to the ribbon bar's tab system at the top of your interface.

Access the Annotate tab and select Add Labels to launch the labeling interface. This action opens the Add Labels dialog box, your command center for all labeling operations. The dialog presents four primary categories: Features, Label Types, Note Label Style, and Marker Style. These options work together to provide precise control over how your annotations appear and function within the drawing environment.

The dynamic nature of Civil 3D becomes apparent as the available options automatically adjust based on your selected feature type. When you expand the Features dropdown menu, you'll discover comprehensive options including Line and Curve, Alignment, Parcel, Profile, Section, Surface, Intersection, Type Network, Pressure Network, Survey Figures, and Catchment. For this parcel labeling workflow, select Parcel to unlock specialized boundary annotation tools.

Once you've selected Parcel, notice how Civil 3D intelligently reconfigures the interface, revealing parcel-specific options: Label Type, Line Label Style, and Curve Label Style. This adaptive interface design streamlines your workflow by presenting only relevant tools. Expanding the Label Type dropdown reveals five distinct labeling approaches: Single Segment for individual boundary lines, Multiple Segment for comprehensive parcel annotation, Replace Multiple Segments for updating existing labels, Area for property size information, and Replace Area for area label modifications.

Our demonstration will cover both Multiple Segment and Single Segment labeling techniques, as these represent the most commonly used approaches in professional surveying practice. Begin by selecting Multiple Segment, which automatically labels all boundary segments of a parcel simultaneously. Next, configure your label styles to match your project's annotation standards and visual requirements.

For this example, we'll utilize the pre-configured label styles already loaded in the drawing, though creating custom label styles represents a best practice for maintaining consistent project branding. When you expand the Line Label Style dropdown, you'll find various formatting options. The "Bearing Over Distance" style provides clear directional and measurement information, making it ideal for boundary documentation. Similarly, for the Curve Label Style, "Delta Over Length and Radius" delivers comprehensive curve geometry data essential for construction and legal documentation.

Before proceeding, consider the additional configuration options available. Table Tag Numbering becomes crucial when integrating with Civil 3D tables—a powerful feature for creating comprehensive parcel schedules and legal descriptions that we'll explore in subsequent tutorials. The Text Object Prompt method offers three workflow approaches: suppress prompts for automated labeling, command line for traditional CAD users, or dialog boxes for those preferring graphical interfaces. The command line method strikes an excellent balance between efficiency and control.

Click Add to initiate the labeling process. Civil 3D's intelligent prompting system guides you through each step via command line instructions. When prompted to "Select Parcel to be Labeled by clicking on Area Label," you're targeting the central area label that identifies each parcel—this serves as Civil 3D's reference point for understanding which property boundary to annotate.

Focus on Property 3 for this demonstration, zooming in to ensure precise selection of the area label. After selection, Civil 3D requests your preferred labeling direction—choose Clockwise to establish a consistent annotation pattern. The software immediately generates professional labels on each segment of the parcel's outer boundary, positioned automatically at optimal locations for readability and drawing clarity.

To demonstrate the flexibility of Civil 3D's labeling system, let's now explore Single Segment labeling. Return to the Label Type dropdown and select Single Segment while maintaining your previously configured Line Label Style and Curve Label Style settings. This approach offers granular control over individual segment annotation.

Click Add to activate Single Segment mode. Notice the fundamental difference in workflow: instead of selecting an Area Label for comprehensive parcel annotation, you now target individual segments for precise label placement. This method provides superior control over label positioning—while Multiple Segment automatically centers labels at segment midpoints, Single Segment allows you to position labels exactly where they'll be most effective for drawing communication.

Demonstrate this flexibility by clicking at various positions along different segments. Place labels strategically to avoid conflicts with other drawing elements, ensure readability at standard plot scales, and maintain professional drawing appearance. This level of control proves invaluable when working with complex parcels or drawings with dense annotation requirements.

With both labeling techniques now demonstrated, close the Add Labels dialog to complete this workflow. These fundamental skills form the foundation for professional parcel documentation in Civil 3D. In our next tutorial, we'll dive deeper into parcel anatomy, exploring the various components that comprise parcel objects and examining the specialized label types available for each element.
